The Legend of Shangri-La Cluster Pays – Beautiful and Asking for VR

The Legend of Shangri-La Cluster Pays by NetEnt2017 was a great year for NetEnt fans. Not only were we been treated to a plethora of new slots, but we’ve also been gifted some innovative bonus features. Furthermore, the team launched multiple blockbuster branded games, such as Planet of the Apes and Emoji Planet. However, we’re a bit concerned that one slot has been overlooked – The Legend of Shangri-La: Cluster Pays.

The Legend of Shangri-La was released back in September 2017 and, in our opinion, it’s one of the best games that NetEnt have created last year. As the name suggests, it boasts a cluster pays mechanism, but that’s not all. The Legend of Shangri-La also benefits from four bonus features and state of the art graphics. Read our full review to learn why we love it so much!

Gameplay

The Legend of Shangri La Gameplay

The Legend of Shangri-La Cluster Pays is played on a 6×5 grid and, as we mentioned above, it features a cluster pays mechanism. This means that instead of using traditional paylines, players will need to collect a ‘cluster’ of nine or more adjacent symbols to collect a win.

The slot is based around the fictional destination in James Hilton’s 1933 novel, Lost Horizon. Set somewhere in the Himalayas, NetEnt have done a great job of making sure everything is in keeping with the theme. This means that the reels hang against a mystical landscape, complete with waterfalls, and symbols on the reels include dragonflies, cherry blossom, butterflies and Koi carp. There’s also three ‘guru’ symbols (cat, elephant and monkey), which appear stacked. The cat is the game’s highest paying symbol; find 30 cat symbols on your reels (a full grid), and you’ll receive 1,000x your stake.

The Legend of Shangri La PaytableThe Legend of Shangri-La is available across all devices, including mobile, desktop and tablet, and it’s playable from 10p, up to £200 per spin. This makes it the perfect slot for all sorts of gaming budgets and, as it’s a medium variance title, you can expect fairly frequent, decent sized returns. Moreover, the game also includes an auto-play feature, which means you can set it to play up o 1,000 spins on your behalf.

Bonus Features

Instead of a wild symbol, The Legend of Shangri-La Cluster Pays comes with a ‘random substitutions’ symbols. This, essentially, works just as a wild would, transforming into an adjacent symbol to create a winning cluster. However, in addition to appearing on your reels like a normal wild, it can also appear when a least two clusters of the same symbol are found on your reels. If these clusters consist of four or more of the same symbol, the substitution symbol will appear to connect the two clusters to create a cluster of nine or more symbols, which will give you a win.

The Legend of Shangri La RespinsThe Legend of Shangri-La also benefits from a sticky re-spins feature which is triggered when at least 2 non-winning clusters of the same symbol appear on the reels. These symbols will remain in place whilst the rest of the reels will re-spin, in the hopes that new symbols will appear and give you enough for a win. The re-spins will continue until new new symbols appear that can be added to the cluster.

Players can also trigger a free spins feature if they collect three or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. The amount of free spins you are rewarded depends on how many scatters you collect in the base game. Three, four, five or six free spins symbols will give you five, six, seven, or eight free spins respectively. Furthermore, if you collect only two free spins symbols, you’ll be given the chance to nudge a third back on to the reels, to activate the round.

In the free spins feature, up to six random substitution symbols may be added after each spin. These give you a greater chance of creating winning clusters than in the base game, and if you do find yourself winning less than 10x your stake once the free spins end, you’ll be treated to an extra spin to help you win that bit more.

Legend of Shangri-La Cluster Pays Slot in Virtual Reality

The Legend of Shangri La Mega Win

Visually, The Legend of Shangri-La is stunning. In fact, the graphics are so compelling, that the moment we first checked this game out, we knew it would make the ideal VR slot. Everything from the backdrop to the design of each symbol is beautifully illustrated and we think it could be argued that The Legend of Shangri-La is the most attractive NetEnt slot, ever. We also love the animated red panda monk that accompanies you as you play.

Big wins are celebrated in style in The Legend of Shangri-La. Expect fireworks, glowing reels and even a little dance from the monk himself. This really helps to make the experience feel special, and we’d love to experience all this in an even more immersive setting.

Conclusion

We know that The Legend of Shangri-La is quite a cutesy slot and whilst that’s one of the reasons this reviewer is smitten with it, we do understand that it could put some people off. However, we’d urge you to look past this! The Legend of Shangri-La provides a fast-paced, thrilling experience, complete with chances to win big and great bonus features. Furthermore, the cluster pays mechanism actually makes wins pretty easy to come by, and who can argue with that? It might not be in virtual reality yet, but we wouldn’t be at all surprised if NetEnt made the switch with this game in the future.
